English cricket player Jonathan Marc Bairstow, commonly referred to as Jonny Bairstow, is a prominent player in the world of cricket. Early Life

Jonny Bairstow was born on September 26, 1989, in Bradford. Bairstow was born to Janet and David Bairstow, a former wicketkeeper for England and Yorkshire. He is the younger half-brother of former Derbyshire footballer Andrew Bairstow and the second son of David Bairstow. After making 654 runs for St. Peter’s School in 2007, Bairstow exhibited early talent when he was chosen as the Young Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year winner. He participated in youth football with Leeds United as well.

Domestic Career

Bairstow’s domestic career has been marked by his consistency and his ability to score runs at crucial moments. Bairstow started his domestic career in 2008 as a second-XI cricket player for Yorkshire. He averaged 61.60 while scoring 308 runs in six championship games. 

Bairstow put on outstanding performances for Yorkshire in the next years. He amassed 1,013 runs at an average of 46.04 in the County Championship during the 2011 season, which included three centuries. In the 2012 season, Bairstow maintained his form, amassing 1,012 runs at an average of 46.00 in the County Championship, including four hundreds.

As Bairstow’s domestic career progressed, he was awarded Yorkshire Player of the Year in 2014. He amassed 1,108 runs at an average of 92.33 in the County Championship during the 2015 season, which included five centuries. Because of his season-long efforts, he was selected as the Professional Cricketers’ Association Player of the Year.

International Career

  1. i) ODI

2011 saw Bairstow make his debut for England in an ODI against India, which marked the start of his international career. He scored 41 runs off 21 balls in his first face off, subsequently following it up with a half-century in the next match. He was chosen man of the match in the fourth match of the series, as he scored 64 runs off 46 balls. Due to his success in the series, Bairstow was selected for the England team that will tour India in 2011–12. 

Impressive performances throughout the tour culminated in Bairstow’s first-ever ODI century in the series’ fifth game. He was crowned the series’ man of the series after finishing with 269 runs at an average of 67.25. In the next series against Pakistan, Bairstow struck his second ODI century, demonstrating his ongoing form. He was chosen man of the match in the third ODI, as he made 128 runs off 93 deliveries.

  1. ii) T-20

Due to his ODI achievements, Bairstow was selected for the England team that played in the 2012 T20 World Cup. In the tournament, he played his first T20I match and scored 18 runs off 29 balls. In the subsequent match, he made a half-century and was declared the man of the match.

iii) Test

In 2012, Bairstow played his first Test match against the West Indies, scoring 16 runs in his opening innings. He made his first-ever century in a Test match against South Africa in 2014, and he has since amassed eleven more hundreds in the competition. Bairstow has been a reliable player for England in the format, as seen by his outstanding performances in Test matches.

World Cup Journey of 2019

The 2019 Cricket World Cup efforts of Bairstow were essential to England’s victory in the tournament. With two centuries, he amassed 532 runs at an average of 48.36. After hitting 111 runs off 109 balls in the group stage encounter against India, he was chosen man of the match. England advanced to the final thanks to Bairstow’s attacks during the game, and they went on to win their first-ever World Cup by defeating New Zealand though the legitimacy victory can obviously be debated, especially based on the manner in which the winner was decided.

IPL Career

Bairstow’s IPL career commenced in 2019 when he was purchased by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 2.2 crores. In the same year, he made his IPL debut. Because of his efforts during the competition, Bairstow was given the Orange Cap, which goes to the IPL’s top run scorer. 

In the 2020 season, Bairstow maintained his strong performance, scoring 345 runs at an average of 31.36. Against Kings XI Punjab, he also got his second IPL century of the year. Though he scored 248 runs at an average of 21.33 in the 2021 season, his form declined. 

The Punjab Kings paid INR 6.75 crores to acquire Bairstow during the 2022 Indian Premier League auction. With the Kings, he scored 498 runs at an average of 33.20, including three half-centuries, during a respectable season. His efforts, though, were insufficient to advance the Kings to the playoffs.

Personal Life

Bairstow is yet to disclose to be in a relationship and is not married. He guards his private life very carefully. Bairstow is from a close-knit family; his late father had a big impact on his career, and his sister was a former international hockey player.
